The EcoFOCI ecosystems research group has been active since 1984. Under the NOAA umbrella, we represent the collaboration of two NOAA line offices, PMEL and AFSC, both located in Seattle, Washington, and both having a visible research role in the changing environment of sub-Arctic, Arctic and Alaskan coastal waters. Both agencies engage with the atmospheric and oceanographic Cooperative Institute (CICOES) at the University of Washington bringing together federal and university researchers and resources to collaborate in this vital research. Since the beginning, our research has been based on cooperation and partnerships between scientists from a variety of scientific disciplines, tackling complex questions and problems relating to ecosystems, changing fisheries health and dynamics, and changing climate and ice patterns.

As part of the NOAA mission we have since inception been at the center of the broader research community, acting on the importance of examining whole ecosystems from numerous places of expertise. We strive in our research to advance understanding and prediction, and to contribute to society with science and tools to support effective decision-making and to promote and support an informed public. Explore the regions of our research that include the Gulf of Alaska, the Aleutian Island passes, the Bering Sea, the Chukchi Sea, the Barents Sea and the Alaskan Arctic.
