Abstract:
- Biophysical measurements have been made at mooring Site 2 (56.88N, 164.03W) almost continuously since 1995, providing the longest near continuous time-series of biophysical variables on the Bering Sea shelf. A series of moorings have also been deployed at Site 4 (57.85N, 168.87W) since 1995, providing almost six years of more sporadic data. In addition, another series of moorings have been deployed at Site 5 (59.90N, 171.70W) from 2004 to present. Added to the biophysical data collected by the moorings, water property measurements have been made at locations around the moorings and along the 70-m transect since 1995. Such long-term observations provide critical data that allow characterizations of interannual variability, quantification of regime shifts and climate change. This project partially funds continued measurements at Sites 2, 4, and 5, together with water samples and plankton samples around all mooring sites and along the monitoring line

Purpose:
-
Time series measurements of currents and other water properties provide necessary metrics for describing this area as well as a background for observing anomolous events as they occur.

Description_of_Geographic_Extent:
- Mooring M2 is located on the southeast Bering Sea shelf near the 70-meter isobath. CTD data are collected over various areas of the southeast Bering Sea shelf during mooring cruises. Casts are taken near the moorings and at other areas of interest, including the Pribilof Islands, near the Aleutian Islands, and along the 70-meter isobath.

- time series instruments deployed on this mooring listed by manufacturer are:
RD Instruments
wcp - workhorse ADCP(300 or 600 khz)
u,v at selected depth levels;
scalars - t,heading,pitch,roll,stDev heading, stDev pitch, stDev roll;
Data are processed using software provided by the manuracturers of the instuments along with a recent calibration file if appropriate.

-
Methodology_Description:
- ADCP(Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler) deployments are simple subsurface moorings consisting of an RDI Workhorse ADCP in a syntatic foam float, an acoustic release, and an anchor constructed from a railroad wheel, all connected using 3/8 inch chain. The ADCP is moored within ten meters of the bottom.

-
Process_Description:
- Data are processed using recommended software from the manufacturer along with recent calibrations. CTD casts done at deployment, recovery, and occassionally mid-mooring times are used to correct time series variables. If data are at all questionable, tidal analysis is used to find the amplitudes of major tidal components of current meter data and these are compared to known components in the near proximity as a quality check of velocity data. Time series values are visually inspected for singleton spikes which are removed when appropriate. Missing data value for all variables is 1.0E+35. Instruments are setup so that the midpoint of the sampling interval falls on an even hour. If the sampling startup could not be set on an even hour or if the clock drifted, data is later interpolated to begin on an even hour and be evenly spaced with initial even delta-t in time.

Overview_Description:
-
-
Entity_and_Attribute_Overview:
- Time series data from mooring site M2 extending from 05-Mar-2003 to 26-Sep-2007. Instruments are internally recording and placed at various depths on a line anchored to the bottom. Measured variables include current velocity, temperature, conductivity, pressure, fluorometer voltage, and ecofluorometer voltage of the water. Spring and summer deployments generally have a surface buoy with meteorological instruments that measure wind velocity, air temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity and shortwave solar radiation.
